The Indian National Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering was established in the year 1948, soon after the second International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering held at Rotterdam.
The Society was affiliated to the International Society in the same year and since then it has strived to fulfil and promote the objectives of the International Society. In December 1970, the name “Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS)” was adopted.
The Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) aims at promoting co-operation amongst engineers and scientists for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Soil Dynamics, Engineering Geology, Rock Mechanics, Snow and Ice Mechanics and allied fields and their practical applications.
It provides a common forum for academicians, research workers, designers, construction engineers, equipment manufacturers and others interested in geotechnical activity. As Local Chapters are the backbone of our Society, more technical activities are being planned to keep abreast of global developments in geotechnical engineering as outlined in our vision document for the new millennium.
In January 1994 it hosted 13th International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ICSMGE). Annual Conference of the Society is an eagerly awaited event looked forward by our members and the geotechnical community as a whole.
Earlier the Conferences were in the form of Symposium, Technical Sessions etc. The regular Conferences popularly known as Indian Geotechnical Conferences (IGCs) started in the year 1983.
The Society celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 1998 at New Delhi when four day Conference was organized as IGC-1998, the extra day devoted to Golden Jubilee activities. The entire year 2008 was celebrated as Diamond Jubilee Year when most of the IGS Chapters were encouraged to organize activities thought the year. It culminated with the Grand Finale during IGC-2008 at Bangalore.
The Society not only had the distinction of hosting the prestigious 13th ICSMGE in the year 1994 at New Delhi. It hosted Asian Regional Conference three times during 1965, 1975 and 2007 which is a unique record. Besides these activities, it hosted 6th ICEG 2010 at New Delhi and look forward to hosting the major International Conference ICSMGE second time, once again the near future.
